‘Convicted car insurance’, otherwise known as ‘banned driver car insurance’ is simply a specialist insurance policy for those that have had their license revoked by being banned from driving in the past. This ban could have been for a number of reasons and the insurance company would class the case as a high risk proposition.

Examples for a convicted driver could be for any of the following reasons:

  • Speeding;
  • Drink driving;
  • Dangerous driving;
  • Accumulation of license points or official warnings;
  • Driving while under the influence of drugs;
  • Continuously repeated small offences.

Once a ban has been issued, when returning to drive and looking for an insurance quote, many insurers would rather not take the high risk that has been proven before by the client previously breaking the law. If a policy is found then the premium is likely to be a lot higher than that of a comparable person of a similar age and sex that is not convicted.

One area to improve on a convicted car insurance policy is potentially through a previous no claims bonus. As long as the no claims bonus has been used on another policy within a certain time frame (usually two years) then it can be used against a convicted car policy. This will likely reduce the premium significantly and is singularly the only way a convicted car policy premium will be reduced until further years of no claims.

Though generally speaking it can be difficult to re-gain car insurance after a license ban, in recent years specialist insurers have arisen that deal directly with convicted drivers. These offer very high premiums however they do take the stress and trouble from finding a policy in the first place. Not only this but they cover convicted drivers as low as 19 years old, offer no excess policies and offer all levels of car insurance cover.
